A U.S. Frigate with 32 guns from 1799
The Essex is a plank on frame model based on the plans and 14 part article by Portia Takakjian. The Essex is not built upside down in a jig like the Harold Hahn models. The Essex hull is built upright and free standing. Portia takes you step by step in her articles, from building the frame blanks, to final masting and rigging. Building and masting plans in the timbering set are drawn by Portia and are well detailed. On the plans, Portia drew only one side of the frames. The Lumber Yard digitized the plans and mirrored the image producing a full frame drawing, saving the builder a lot of copying and pasting. Patterns for the framing blanks were also added.
Having a large selection of wood on hand, you can bet this timbering set includes a fine collection of woods. All the framing stock is thickness sanded to the proper dimensions and ready to start building frames. Material for hull planking are all milled and ready for a final finish. The CAD work was done at the Lumber Yard. The impressive laser cutting work is done at Double O laser. The deck components are all laser cut with notched deck beams and carlings. Keel, keelson, deadwood and window frames are also laser cut. This model is 3/16 scale.
